Cullman businessman Heath Allbright is officially the newest member of the Alabama House of Representatives after winning the House District 11 special election on Tuesday.

Allbright, who ran as a Republican, received the overwhelming majority of the votes — 2,783 ballots, or 88.38% — easily defeating his Democrat opponent, Alex Braswell, who received 351 votes.

The HD11 seat opened up earlier this year when former State Representative Randall Shedd (R-Fairview) joined Senate President Pro Tem Garlan Gudger (R-Cullman) as a member of his staff.

Alabama Republican Party chairman John Wahl released a statement Tuesday, congratulating Allbright on his win.

"I want to congratulate Heath Allbright on his strong victory tonight. Heath has proven himself to be a conservative leader, a man of faith, and a fighter for Alabama families," Wahl said. "I know he will bring that same dedication to the State House as he works to defend our freedoms, protect our values, and ensure that the voices of the people are always put first. The voters of House District 11 chose well, and I look forward to working alongside Heath to keep Alabama strong."
