HOOVER — The City of Hoover threw its annual “4th on the 1st” Independence Day event at the Hoover Met. Nearly 7,000 residents and visitors from across central Alabama gathered to watch the FIFA World Cup, participate in a record-breaking event and watch a spectacular fireworks finale.

Rain didn’t stop the city from breaking a Guinness World Record for most aluminum cans opened at one time.

According to the City, during halftime of the U.S. Men's National Team's Round of 32 match, 2,842 participants simultaneously opened drink cans, surpassing the previous Guinness World Records title of 2,747.

"The current record to beat was 2,747," said Tina Shi, Guinness World Records adjudicator. "And today, with all of your efforts, your final result is 2,842."

Other activities include an on-site oil painting, mascots and other entertainment.

There was a hot dog eating contest between five out of seven members of the council. First-term Councilwoman Ashley Lovell defeated Councilmen Robin Schultz, Derrick Murphy, Steve McClinton and Gene Smith.

Lovell took home the new annual prize.
