House Majority Leader Paul Lee (R-Dothan) and all 75 members of the House Republican Caucus sent a letter in support of House Speaker Nathaniel Ledbetter (R-Rainsville) on Thursday to the Alabama Republican Party’s steering committee in advance of the annual winter meeting on Saturday.

The members wrote, “Ahead of the March 7 ALGOP Winter Meeting, we, the Alabama House Republican Caucus, are writing to express our strongest support for House Speaker Nathaniel Ledbetter.”

“Make no mistake about it, the last several weeks have been a challenging time for our caucus. However, political distractions do not erase a record of results. Nor do they diminish the conservative victories that have defined the Alabama House under Speaker Ledbetter’s leadership,” the members wrote in the letter. “Fortunately, true conservatives such as incoming governor and current U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville, Governor Kay Ivey, Lt. Governor Will Ainsworth, and many others have dismissed these claims on the grounds that Speaker Ledbetter’s record as House Majority Leader and now as Speaker tell an entirely different story.”

The letter comes after leaked audio of an internal House Republican caucus meeting where Ledbetter said, "I could give a shit about the Republican Party." The comment came after a caucus discussion over former House Majority Leader Scott Stadthagen (R-Hartselle) running for Alabama Republican Party chairman. Ledbetter later told 1819 News after the audio was leaked that he wholeheartedly supports the Republican Party and that his priority was getting every Republican member of the Alabama House reelected and growing the party's supermajority.

Stadthagen later resigned as House majority leader.
