Over two years since facing a wave of criticism for his drag queen performances and inter-classroom behavior, former Mountain Gap Middle School teacher James Miller is touting a new documentary detailing the "harsh modern reality of being an out and proud middle school teacher in Alabama."
From late 2022 into 2023, 1819 News extensively reported on Miller's activity as a drag queen under the persona of Madge D. Vine (Majesty Divine).
Initial reporting in October 2022 related to videos of Miller in his drag persona reading a book about dogs, in which he quipped that "everybody likes a big bone" and has "meat on their mind."
The "family-friendly" Drag Queen Story Time was hosted and live-streamed by a local animal shelter in September 2022, where Miller made the sexually suggestive remarks.
Two months later, 1819 News uncovered audio of Miller on the drag podcast "Look Who's Tucking," where he detailed how he "strategically" and "covertly" placed LGBTQ+ material in his classroom. Two days later, state education officials announced Miller's retirement.
Now, over two years after the initial drama, Miller has resurfaced as the focal point of an independent documentary, "Unveiling Majesty."
"The mission of 'Unveiling Majesty' is to spotlight the resilience and power of LGBTQ+ voices in Alabama through the dynamic journey of Majesty Divine," the description on the film's crowdfunding page reads. "By blending history and artistry, we aim to shatter stereotypes, inspire empathy, and spark a vital conversation about acceptance and equality in AL."
The documentary's Facebook page offers a ticket to a "drag and comedy show" for anyone who makes a contribution. The film's crowdfunding page shows nearly a third of the requested $30,000 has been raised thus far.
"Step into the dazzling world of drag culture and the LGBTQ+ community with Unveiling Majesty, set against the picturesque backdrop of Huntsville, Alabama," the post reads. "From the award-winning director of Cans Can't Stand comes another groundbreaking short documentary that shines a spotlight on the injustices facing LGBTQIA+ communities in the Deep South."
"But this is more than a film—it's a movement. Unveiling Majesty aims to challenge stereotypes, foster understanding, and celebrate the resilience of lgbtq+ communities. It's about preserving stories often erased, amplifying voices too often silenced, and showing the world that LGBTQ+ individuals don't just survive—they thrive," the post adds.
