An immigration judge on Thursday denied bond for Alireza Doroudi, a University of Alabama mechanical engineering doctoral student from Iran arrested by ICE in March.

According to ICE, Doroudi is currently being held in the Jena/LaSalle Detention Facility in Louisiana after initially being detained in Pickens County Jail.

"We are deeply disappointed by today's decision to deny bond by Judge Maithe Gonzalez. The government has provided no evidence in the record that Mr. Doroudi poses any national security threat," David Rozas, an attorney representing Doroudi, said in an emailed statement to the Crimson White.

According to al(dot)com, González said Douroudi failed to prove he was not a national security threat as the government alleged and was a flight risk due to having a revoked visa and "scarce ties to the community."

"Mr. Doroudi is not a flight risk. He is a beloved member of the community, as evidenced by the overwhelming outpouring of support from students, faculty, and neighbors in recent weeks," Rozas told the Crimson White.

A Department of Homeland Security spokesperson previously told 1819 News regarding their arrest of Doroudi, "ICE HSI made this arrest in accordance with the State Department's revocation of Doroudi's student visa. This individual posed significant national security concerns."
