During his weekly appearance on Huntsville radio WVNN's "The Dale Jackson Show," State Sen. Arthur Orr (R-Decatur), who chairs the Senate Education Budget Committee, expressed concerns echoed by other lawmakers regarding Birmingham's Magic City Acceptance Academy, a public charter school that caters to LGBTQ students.
The school reportedly is still promoting diversity, equity and inclusion in its handbook despite a "divisive concepts" passed by the Alabama Legislature and signed by Gov. Kay Ivey in 2024.
Orr described the charter school as "in the crosshairs" for the 2025 legislative session, which begins this week.
"I think you're quite prescient in your estimation of what's going to happen in the session because it is, to use your word, Dale — it is in the crosshairs. And they have, you know, they're not going by the letter of the law that was passed. And it's something we're going to have to deal with. Now, what's the best way to go about that? We'll have to figure it out, but they are definitely in the sights."
"It's boiled over to a point where we can't ignore it," Orr added. "I would predict that we'll take some form of action in the '25 session."
