Monday marked three years since Russia invaded Ukraine, and President Donald Trump says a deal to finally end the conflict is imminent.
The deal would include further protections for Ukraine in exchange for access to the country's rare earth minerals.
U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Auburn) praised Trump for negotiating a deal that would end the killing and recoup billions of dollars of taxpayer money spent aiding Ukraine.
"President Trump is a deal-maker and a peacemaker. We knew he'd get it over with; we just didn't know how soon," Tuberville said Monday on Newsmax's "Robb Schmitt Tonight." "I'm just glad the United States taxpayers are going to get some of their money back from an investment they made in war. We haven't done that. We spent, what $10 trillion in the Middle East, and all for nothing? We just left Afghanistan in the middle of the night. But at the end of the day, finally, we're getting something done."
Tuberville said former President Joe Biden and the Democrats could have ended the war any time while they were in charge over the last four years, but they chose not to. Even now, Tuberville said the Democrats would rather see the war continue than give Trump, whom they allege is a Putin puppet, a win.
"We don't have anything to do for Ukraine. I mean, we've tried to help the people out over there. We've done all the security for all of Europe for many, many years," Tuberville continued. "President Trump is not a Putin apologist. He just wants to get the war over with where people will go back to work and build their countries back. Vladimir Putin has no desire to go west… The guy couldn't take Ukraine. How in the world is he going to go all the way through Europe?"
He continued, "At the end of the day, it's going to be over with. The Democrats hate it that Donald Trump is getting something done. It's their worst nightmare. They hate him so much that they want this war to continue."
