Flags on Alabama’s state buildings are now being flown at half-staff in memory of deceased former President Jimmy Carter. Under an order from outgoing President Joe Biden, flags will remain at half-staff for 30 days.

On Monday, Gov. Kay Ivey issued an order of her own. It directed the flags on Alabama’s state buildings to return to full staff on Monday, January 20, for the inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump. Those Alabama flags will then return to half-staff on January 21 for the remainder of the 30-day mourning period in memory of Carter.

Alabama is at least the second state to issue such an order. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has also ordered state flags to be raised to full staff on January 20.

“I am directing flags be returned to full staff on the grounds of the Alabama state Capitol and all state buildings January 20, for Inauguration Day,” Ivey stated in a Facebook post Monday.

She added, “Tuesday, January 21, all flags will, once again, fly at half-staff to resume the 30-day period of mourning for President Carter.”
