Governor Kay Ivey signed into law a one-cent grocery sales tax cut on Friday.
House Bill 386 by State Rep. Danny Garrett (R-Trussville) cuts the state's grocery tax by an additional 1%, bringing the total reduction on the state sales tax on groceries from 4% down to 2% since 2023.
“When we can reduce taxes in Alabama and provide some relief to the hardworking people of this state, I am all for it. I was pleased to sign House Bill 386 to take another notch off our state grocery tax,” Ivey said in a statement.
The tax reduction will go into effect for Alabama shoppers on September 1.
