On Wednesday, Jefferson County GOP chairman Chris Brown said he had heard discussions from multiple sources that Jefferson County Sheriff Mark Pettway was in legal trouble.
Brown went on "Alabama's Morning News with JT" and suggested Pettway had been "misappropriating funds with the office," among "other things."
"What that problem is is yet to be determined," Brown said. "But something with misappropriating funds with the office; I'm hearing other things. You know, but his brother also helps to manage much of these illegal gambling operations, which he's not cracking down on, which is his job as the sheriff."
"So, there are a lot of problems that he has and I think this is coming to a head sooner than later," he added.
Host JT Nysewander said he has also heard rumors that more people are involved and could be in trouble.
Brown called Pettway a "bad" sheriff, claiming he has been picking favorites within the office and has promoted unqualified candidates to different positions.
For years, deputies have come forward with claims of Pettway being racist. Several deputies said undue promotions based on skin color have caused morale issues. The alleged acts have also led to lawsuits and deputies leaving the county.
When a sheriff is removed from office, Gov. Kay Ivey appoints a replacement. The top two candidates already being discussed for Jefferson County are former sheriff candidate Jared Hudson and State Rep. Allen Treadaway (R-Morris).
Brown said he would support either, but he wants the governor to appoint a Republican.
