After months of speculation, former U.S. Rep. Jerry Carl (R-Mobile) confirmed he will not run for mayor of Mobile.

“Tina and I are humbled by so many folks asking us to run for Mayor of Mobile,” Carl posted on X. “After 90 days of prayer and seeking the Lord’s vision for our future, we don’t feel led to run for this office.”

Carl said it is important for Mobile voters to choose the right person for the job since Mayor Sandy Stimpson announced he would not run for re-election.

“Mayor Stimpson has the City on the right path, and we all need to be careful to elect a person with a similar vision,” Carl continued. “Thank you to everyone who has supported us and considered me as a potential candidate. I look forward to continuing a life of public service to our state and our country.”

Carl served in Alabama’s first congressional district from 2021 to 2024. Following redistricting, Carl was pitted against U.S. Rep. Barry Moore (R-Enterprise), who previously served in Alabama’s second congressional district. Moore won in a rare and heated incumbent versus incumbent contest.

Carl was named among several possible candidates for Mobile’s next mayor shortly after the Stimpson announcement.

Mobile’s municipal election will be held on August 26, 2025, and the next mayor will take office on November 3, 2025.
