Jim Zeigler, former Alabama State Auditor, recently resigned from 1819 News to promote conservative voter registration in Alabama’s newly drawn second congressional district.

He is working for “Save Our U.S. House,” a project of citizen activists in South Alabama, which is an independent project not affiliated with any campaign.

“Alabama’s second congressional district race could determine control of the U.S. House,” Zeigler said before leaving his beat writing “all things Alabama” with 1819 News.

The “Save Our U.S. House” project was started by the same individuals who started a citizen group in 2019 that successfully blocked a toll on the I-10 Bayway. The group “Block the Tolls” started with one member, Zeigler, and grew to 55,000 in 3 and a half months.

“We developed a system for organizing citizens on an issue.  It worked then, and we are using it now. The issue now is to keep the Democrats from taking control of the U.S. House and bringing back the Nancy Pelosi bunch,” Zeigler said.

The new project started on June 25 with one supporter, Zeigler. It has grown to 311 supporters.

“Our goal is 5,000 active supporters by the October 20 deadline for voter registration in Alabama,” Zeigler said.

People sign on as supporters by going to the Facebook page. They then assist people whom they know to register to vote. The group provides training, forms and an app for voter registration by cell phone. The next training is Tuesday, July 16 at 6 p.m. at Magnolia Baptist Church, 6058 Thedore-Dawes Road in Mobile County.  No ticket or RSVP is needed. Light refreshments are provided.

The goal is for each citizen to register ten new voters before the October 20 registration deadline.

The citizens also start non-partisan voter registration drives, each in his own church.

“If Donald Trump goes back in as President, the last thing he needs is for the Nancy Pelosi bunch to control the U.S. House. That would be a constant hindrance to his agenda,” Zeigler said. “Alabama is a strong state for Trump, and he will win Alabama. Neither one of our U.S. Senators is up for election this year. So that leaves the U.S. House. The place where an Alabama citizen can make a difference in this nation and in our future is in the U.S House, and the target district is AL2. We have a networking plan that could add 10,000 to 20,000 extra Republican votes on November 5 in congressional district 2. That can make the difference. The Democrats will be bringing in millions of dollars and professional organizers into Alabama. We can overcome that by our system to organize everyday citizens. And we shall overcome.”

Zeigler first began writing for 1819 News in September 2023. Since that time, he has written 438 articles.

He described his “beat” for 1819 News as “Alabama people, places, events, groups and prominent deaths.” He started with 1819 News after sending in an unsolicited story the day after the death of singer/songwriter Jimmy Buffett. His story went viral and led to his full-time writing gig.
