Former Alabama Republican Party chairman John Wahl announced on Wednesday that he’d raised more than $1 million in the first day of his campaign for lieutenant governor.

The total is the largest day-one fundraising amount for an Alabama lieutenant governor campaign. None of the fundraising haul was a self-loan to his campaign.

“This isn’t just about a number–it’s about what that number represents,” Wahl said in a statement. “Alabamians are ready for bold, proven conservative leadership that will defend our Constitution, protect our God-given rights, rein in government overreach, and put hardworking families first. This early support shows that people know I will deliver–and that I won’t back down.

Wahl served as chairman of the Alabama Republican Party since 2021. He resigned as chairman on Friday after qualifying to run for lieutenant governor. President Donald Trump endorsed Wahl for lieutenant governor last week.

The primary election in Alabama is on May 19.

Other qualified candidates in the GOP primary include Alabama Secretary of State Wes Allen, Commissioner of Agriculture and Industries Rick Pate, Nicole Wadsworth, Dean Odle, George Childress, Dr. Stewart Tankersley and Pat Bishop.

Lt. Gov. Will Ainsworth is term-limited from seeking re-election.
