The elections for state officers of the Alabama Republican Party are coming up on March 1.
All state party officers, including the state chairman, are up for election. Incumbent chair John Wahl has served two terms since 2021 and is now seeking a third term.
At this time, no one has announced to run against Wahl.
When Wahl was elected state chair in 2021 and re-elected in 2023, he faced no opposition either time. He is going for a three-peat.
Elections for the state party officers will be conducted, with the approximately 500 members of the State Republican Executive Committee voting at their Hoover meeting on March 1. The meeting will be held at the Wynfrey Hotel in Hoover from 8 a.m. to noon on that Saturday.
Wahl is professionally a lepidopterist, meaning a butterfly farmer. He and family have a farm in Limestone County, west of Athens. It has a lepidopterarium to grow butterflies. They supply over 40,000 butterflies annually. Wahl's butterflies have been featured by Huntsville Botanical Gardens, the Bronx Zoo, Mental Floss magazine and "Answers in Genesis Foundation."
Wahl fittingly says his profession is “one of the most beautiful job opportunities,” which he contrasts with his work in politics.
During his chairmanship, Wahl has:
Raised over $3 million for party causes.
Recruited a stellar cast of speakers at state Republican meetings, including President Trump; Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis; South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem, now Trump’s Secretary of Homeland Security; RNC co-chair Lara Trump; and Georgia Senate candidate Herschel Walker, a former Heisman Trophy winner as a running back at Georgia.
Carried Alabama as one of the strongest states for President Trump.
Continued and safeguarded Alabama’s supermajority Republican control of both houses of the state legislature.
Supported and passed constitutional carry for Alabama citizens who own guns.
Helped organize “The Mighty Alabama Strike Force” and “Operation Restore America” to enable teams of Alabama Republicans to work in vital out-of-state elections, such as the Virginia governor’s election, which Republicans won in a key upset. In 2024, Alabama Republicans worked in Georgia, carrying the vital state for Trump.
Wahl was elected and then re-elected as vice-chair of the Republican National Committee, leading its southern division. That position could benefit Alabama during the second Trump administration.
