Democrat donor David Silverstein has qualified to run for City Council Place Two against the incumbent, Gerald Garner, according to the City of Mountain Brook.

Silverstein ran for the Jefferson County Commission, losing to Mike Bolin in a special election in July 2023.

During that nonpartisan race, Silverstein sent mailers featuring Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin and former U.S. Senator Doug Jones.

Mail ads from the Committee to Elect David Silverstein show former U.S. Sen. Doug Jones endorsing Silverstein for the position.

Campaign finance reports show that since then, Silverstein has donated to at least four democrats, including a 2024 contribution to Kamala Harris.

Silverstein told the Hoover Sun in 2023, “I have supported Democrats when I didn’t think that Republican fit the criteria and have supported Republicans when I didn’t think the Democrat.” Going on to say, “And I supported a job well done.”

The election will be held on August 26. A run-off election, if necessary, will occur on September 23. Information about the election calendar and polling places from the City of Mountain Brook is available on their website.

According to the website, "The governing body of the City of Mountain Brook consists of five council members and a mayor. All members of the governing body are elected at-large (as opposed to districts), serve 4-year terms, and receive no compensation for their service to the City. Beginning in 2004, the terms of office of the mayor and members of the city council shall be staggered (City Ordinance No. 1627) and elections will be held every two years."

Seats two and four, as well as the office of mayor, will be on the 2025 ballot.
