While some of the state's policymakers debate the future of law enforcement in Alabama's capital city as a heightened violent crime lingers, the city's mayor is out speaking on behalf of presumptive Democrat presidential nominee Vice President Kamala Harris' presidential bid.
Montgomery Mayor Steven Reed was a guest on NewsNation on Saturday and discussed Harris' candidacy, which resulted from incumbent President Joe Biden's decision to step away from the party's nomination.
Reed told NewsNation's Anna Kooiman he did not believe Biden's decision was "health-related."
"Did you notice him freezing?" Kooiman asked of a motionless Biden during a Juneteenth event last month in Washington, D.C. "She was dancing. But he just froze, and people are going 'oh.' It appears that they have been health-related."
"No, I don't think it was health-related at all. I had the opportunity speak to the president, and one of the things that I think, you know, sometimes when you're in a social setting like that, people respond differently. I'm not always on beat. That may be harder to imagine. So there are things we really have to look at being in the human context and not just over-magnify a certain issue. I don't know if you've been dancing people to say that was good or bad. So it's fine. I think the president has been great in his leadership and I think the president made a patriotic decision on not deciding to run and understand it was on time to pass the torch."
