U.S. Sen. Katie Britt (R-Montgomery) has joined an effort with U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) questioning Delta Air Lines CEO Ed Bastian for the treatment of Marine Corps veteran Catherine Banks, who was reportedly removed from a Delta flight for wearing a T-shirt that raised awareness about military suicides.
According to a report from NBC Bay Area, Banks was stopped at San Francisco International Airport last week for a shirt that said, "Do not give in to the war within. End veteran suicide."
Britt and Graham called for Bastian to review the Delta Air Lines policy in a letter first obtained by Fox Business Network.
"Raising awareness and ending the stigma are integral to improving mental health outcomes and ending our country's epidemic of suicides," the letter from Britt and Graham said. "Your employee's actions ran counter to those goals."
"We urge you to take the appropriate action to not only ensure the passenger is appropriately compensated for the distressing experience, but that you also reconsider the training of your employees to ensure that no individual passenger is treated in such a shameful manner," it added.
The Fox Business report also said a Delta internal memo claimed the customer's t-shirt or other attire "was not a factor in this particular situation," but maintained it was taking the concerns seriously.
