The misuse of the presidential pardon is not new. History offers several examples of controversial pardons that undermined justice:

  • Andrew Johnson: After the Civil War, Johnson issued widespread pardons to Confederate leaders, which was an insult to Union sacrifices and a failure to uphold justice.

  • Bill Clinton: On his final day in office in 2001, Clinton pardoned financier Marc Rich, who had been charged with tax evasion, fraud, and illegal dealings with Iran. The fact that Rich’s ex-wife donated significantly to Hillary Clinton’s campaign and the Clinton presidential library fund sparked allegations of corruption and favoritism. Clinton also pardoned his half-brother, Roger Clinton, for a drug offense.

  • Gerald Ford: Ford’s 1974 pardon of Richard Nixon after the Watergate scandal remains one of the most debated misuses of the presidential pardon. While Ford argued it was necessary to help the nation heal, many saw it as an evasion of accountability.

A Betrayal of Public Trust

The concept of a presidential pardon is rooted in justice and mercy, not in providing protection for powerful families.

Who did President Biden think he was fooling when he said he wasn't going to pardon his son, Hunter Biden? It's hard to believe that anyone genuinely took his statement at face value, especially considering the scrutiny surrounding his family.

In my view, Biden’s pardon of his son undermines public trust and highlights the urgent need to restore faith in our institutions. Hunter Biden’s pardon reinforces the perception that those in power are held to different standards. Americans deserve leaders who demonstrate integrity and fairness, but Biden has placed family loyalty above his responsibilities as a leader.

Frederick Douglass often spoke about justice and the legal system, emphasizing fairness, equality, and the importance of moral integrity in governance. One of his notable quotes related to justice is:

"Where justice is denied, where poverty is enforced, where ignorance prevails, and where any one class is made to feel that society is an organized conspiracy to oppress, rob, and degrade them, neither persons nor property will be safe.”

When leaders abuse their power for personal gain or to favor family members and friends, they undermine trust in the justice system and compromise the core principle of fairness.

Genuine justice demands equality for all, not preferential treatment for a select few.

A Dangerous Example

Biden’s pardon goes beyond a family issue; it represents a repeated abuse of presidential pardon, allowing presidents to shield individuals from accountability. If this misuse is allowed to continue, it will deeply erode the integrity of our constitutional Republic, making it harder to hold leaders accountable for their misconduct.

A System of Unequal Justice

While the powerful seem to escape consequences, many ordinary Americans face harsh penalties. This double standard reveals a justice system that often benefits the elite while leaving others behind.

Douglass championed the rule of law as a safeguard for the powerless and boldly condemned a system that failed to protect African Americans. Today, we confront a similar challenge, where justice is too often influenced by wealth and connections rather than fairness and accountability.

Douglass’ Vision for Justice

Frederick Douglass taught us that justice requires vigilance, noting, "The price of Liberty is eternal vigilance." We must hold leaders accountable and demand fairness in government. Turning a blind eye to the misuse of “the pardon power” only deepens the divide between those who govern and those who are governed.

The power of the presidential pardon should be used wisely – to correct real injustices, not to shield the wealthy and powerful from accountability.
