Former Mobile Public Safety director Lawrence Battiste announced his run for Mobile mayor, according to WKRG.

Battiste resigned as public safety director in 2023 after taking the job to become the deputy administrator of Youth Court. Although the move came with a pay cut, Battiste said he felt he could do more for the city in that capacity.

The U.S. Navy veteran began his career in law enforcement with the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office. He also served as the police chief for Prichard and the Chief Probation Officer for the Juvenile Court of Mobile County.

He is a graduate of the FBI National Academy.

Montgomery Mayor Steven Reed named Battiste special public safety advisor in June following criticism over increased crime.

Mayor Sandy Stimpson announced in August that he would not run for re-election in 2025.
