Mel Showers, a beloved television news anchor in Mobile, has died. He was 78.
Showers worked at WKRG for five decades. From a booth announcer, he worked his way up to an anchor position. He was inducted into the Alabama Broadcasters Hall of Fame in 2019, the same year he retired.
WKRG’s Devon Walsh posted on Facebook about her experience working alongside the legendary anchor.
“I was shocked by the news earlier today,” Walsh stated. “Words cannot express what a wonderful man Mel was. He was my first co-anchor and mentor. He treated everyone with respect. His legacy is kindness, professionalism, and always wanting to make sure what we reported was correct and unbiased.”
“He cheered people on,” she continued. “He celebrated their success. His laugh….oh that laugh! He retired from WKRG after 50 years, and his memory set the foundation for the kind of work we do today.”
Showers was once named “Honorary Mayor of Mobile.” He appreciated enough to have not one but two city streets named in his honor.
Funeral arrangements have not been announced.
