Les Miz’s setting is France in the early 1800s. The principal character is Jean Valjean, a peasant who had been imprisoned for 19 years after stealing a loaf of bread for his sister’s starving child. After his release, Valjean decides to skip out on his parole and start life anew after his bishop inspired him. A police inspector named Javert pursues the wanted man for most of the play. Along the way, Valjean and friends are swept into a revolutionary fervor in which young idealists attempt to overthrow the government at a street barricade in Paris.

A film version was adapted in 2012.

The musical is based on the 1862 novel of the same title by Victor Hugo.

The musical version is the second-longest-running musical behind “The Fantatiscks.”

The show is part of a series of presentations by "Broadway in Birmingham."  More information here
