The city of Athens was adversely impacted by tornadoes and thunderstorms that ripped through the Tennessee Valley from late Saturday evening to early Sunday morning.
The entire Courthouse Square appeared to suffer significant damage, including the Limestone County Courthouse.
Meteorologist James Spann posted this picture from downtown Athens after sunrise on Sunday from his X account.
"The courthouse square in downtown Athens (AL) this morning… photo from the City of Athens NWS survey teams will look at the damage later this morning; most likely it was caused by a brief tornado," Spann stated.
U.S. Rep. Dale Strong (R-Monrovia) also posted about the damage on X and offered support and resources from his office.
"I'm saddened to see the damage in downtown Athens, but thankful there were no injuries," he wrote. "As a federal partner, I stand ready to assist local leaders and small business owners with any resources for recovery they might need."
The National Weather Service, out of Huntsville, said it would send a survey crew to Athens to assess the damage.
"747am: We'll be sending out a survey crew to Athens this morning to take a look at the damage from the storms that moved through late last night/early this morning. We'll update you on what we find later today!" the service posted on X.
