An attorney representing an alleged drug “kingpin” apologized to a federal judge in Mobile on Wednesday after submitting a brief with false case citations generated by an artificial intelligence program.

According to Mobile’s Fox 10, Glennie Antonio “Little Man” McGee told U.S. District Judge Terry Moorer he no longer had confidence in James Johnson as his attorney. Moorer agreed to remove Johnson from the case and appoint a new attorney. The judge delayed McGee’s trial until December or January and will appoint a new lawyer to represent him.

“I made a terrible mistake, and I know I made a mistake,” Johnson told the judge, according to Fox 10.

According to the outlet, Moorer said that he took it upon himself to review other filings by Johnson and discovered additional discrepancies in another motion, adding that he has not yet determined the appropriate punishment.

“It’s a serious matter, one that I’m going to take under submission,” Moorer said during Wednesday’s hearing. “There will have to be a sanction.”
