A suspect has been charged for the in-custody murder of a 72-year-old inmate at the Macon County Detention Facility following an investigation by the Alabama State Bureau of Investigation (SBI).
The SBI was deployed after the Macon County Sheriff's Office contacted the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) regarding the death.
During the investigation, it was determined that Daniel Pollard, 24, of Tuskegee, physically assaulted John Reed, 72, of Union Springs, in a holding cell. Reed was pronounced deceased at the jail.
Court documents claim that Pollard repeatedly hit and kicked Reed in the head, resulting in his death. Pollard is now charged with murder in the killing. Records say the beating happened in a holding cell.
Pollard has a lengthy history with the Macon County Jail. He was initially arrested on 2018 charges of first-degree robbery and attempted murder by allegedly trying to shoot his victim with a handgun while he was running in the woods. He was released on bond, but it was revoked in 2019 after he was charged again with third-degree burglary, second-degree theft and attempting to elude police.
Pollard was charged in 2019 with escaping or attempted escape from the jail.
In 2020, Pollard was again charged with attempting to escape by stealing keys by using force or the threat of force against a deputy.
