The Mountain Brook City Council voted Monday to appoint Maretta Ashford to Place 1, the seat vacated by Mayor Graham Smith. Ashford was sworn in on Wednesday morning and will serve the remainder of Smith's term, ending in November 2027.
"Maretta Ashford is a tireless and seasoned volunteer for our City. I have personally worked with her on many projects and have the utmost confidence in her ability to serve," Smith told 1819 News.
"I am truly honored and humbled by this opportunity to serve on the City Council. It is a privilege to work alongside such a wonderful group of City Council members, all of our dedicated city staff, and all within our community. I'm excited to get to work, ready to listen to what is important to you, your family, and overall help continue moving our city forward in a way that we can all be proud of, just as those who have come before me," Ashford said in a social media post.
Ashford grew up in Mountain Brook and attended Cherokee Bend, Mountain Brook Junior High, and Mountain Brook High School before attending Auburn University, where she graduated with a degree in sociology, according to a profile of her in Village Living.
She was the parent-teacher organization (PTO) council president in 2021-2022 for Mountain Brook Schools.
"Few people care more about Mountain Brook than Maretta Ashford. She has been a dedicated and thoughtful leader in every role she's held, from her time on the Planning Commission to her service as PTO President. Her deep roots in Mountain Brook and her steady commitment to doing what's best for our community make her an outstanding choice for public service," city council president Billy Pritchard said.
