This election season is keeping mailboxes full with campaign mailers as candidates prepare for the May 19 primary. Voters have taken to social media to share photos and information on the number of mailers they’re receiving.
In the Alabama House of Representatives District 95 race, State Rep. Frances Holk-Jones (R-Foley) shared an AL(dot)com story about mailers on her campaign Facebook page. After a follower responded, “How about stop sending out all the junk mail,” Holk-Jones had a suggestion.
“Don’t take this the wrong way, but the purpose is to educate voters about the positions of the people running for office,” Holk-Jones wrote. “If you don’t want to be educated on voting, maybe you should unregister so you won’t get all that junk mail. You would save all of us money and save yourself the headache of tossing it all in the trash.”
The comments have since been deleted.
Opponents of Holk-Jones also took to social media to respond.
Joe Freeman said, “I understand the text messages, TV ads, and mail about the election can be really annoying. But instead of having some sympathy for voters expressing their frustration, my opponent has decided to attack them. Her behavior reveals what she thinks of the people she seeks to represent.”
Freeman also took the opportunity to talk about his campaign.
“So here’s a promise I can make: I will always show respect for you and your point of view, no matter how much we may disagree on the issues,” he continued. “As an American, you deserve nothing less from your elected officials.”
Eljiah Davidson, who is also running against Holk-Jones, took advantage of the online back-and-forth between his two opponents.
“You can read posts, articles, and mailers about my opponents slinging mud at each other—or you can read this short post about two ideas I have to pay for GETTING RID of the grocery tax in a fiscally responsible way. Your choice,” he posted.
