According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), a mild earthquake registering a magnitude 2.4 event rattled north Alabama's Madison County on Sunday.

The Sunday afternoon earthquake rattled the area at 12:09 pm CDT near Gurley, east of Huntsville.

The USGS estimated the earthquake's epicenter at a depth of 2.9 kilometers. No damage was reported.

The quake was the third one in recent days in the area. Nine days earlier, on August 12, a 2.7 magnitude earthquake struck near Hazel Green, just north of Huntsville near the Alabama-Tennessee state line.

Earlier during the day on August 12, 32 miles east of Gurley near Stevenson, a smaller 1.9 magnitude earthquake occurred.
