Mobile Airport Authority (MAA) chairman Elliot Maisel announced he would be stepping down from his position and into a chairman emeritus role.

Maisel held the position for eight years, during which time the airport has grown, expanded its flight offerings, and remained financially stable.

Mobile Mayor Sandy Stimpson said Maisel also played a critical role in the airport expansion project at the Mobile International Airport downtown.

“Upon being elected, I knew that one of the most transformative things we could do for the City of Mobile was to move commercial passenger service downtown,” Stimpson said in a statement. “At the time, there was a long list of reasons why most believed it impossible. As I learned more, I became convinced that with the right leadership at the helm, we stood a chance.”

“Elliot Maisel was the person for the job,” he continued. With Elliot’s dedication, passion and grit, MAA is building the new Mobile International Airport downtown at the Brookley Aeroplex. Under Elliot’s leadership, MAA and all the organization’s assets are in an excellent position.”

Stimpson said Maisel would still offer input and guidance to the board.

E. Luckett Robinson will be named chairman.
