The Mobile Baykeeper is continuing to request the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers make changes in its effort to widen and deepen the Port of Mobile, despite the Port Authority asking the non-profit to come to the table.

Commercial and recreational anglers have complained about mud being dumped into the bay, covering oyster beds and seagrass.

The Baykeeper sent a letter of intent to sue the Corps on July 23. The letter claimed the Corps failed to protect Gulf sturgeon during a dredging project in Mobile Bay.

On July 31, the Alabama Port Authority responded by asking the Baykeeper to continue conversations over economic and environmental concerns.

Now, the Baykeeper is planning a public town hall meeting for August 13.

The meeting will focus on asking the Corps to only dispose of mud in the bay if it is for beneficial use. They also want involvement in “beneficial use” projects.

The town hall will be at Saint Philip Neri Catholic Church on Dauphin Island from 6 p.m. until 7:30 p.m.
