Mobile Mayor Sandy Stimpson participated in the Alabama Big 10 Mayors Association meeting on Sunday and Monday in Tuscaloosa.
One focus of the meeting was public safety. Stimpson said the mayors discussed the latest law enforcement tools, including drones. He said how Tuscaloosa uses drones can help solve crimes, protect officers and keep citizens safe.
"In some instances, first responders are launching drones to gather immediate information while officers or firefighters are still en route to a scene," Stimpson said in a letter to citizens. "This allows for increased coordination between police headquarters and officers on the ground, ultimately making both officers and the public safer."
Stimpson thanked Tuscaloosa Mayor Walt Maddox for hosting the meeting and said what he learned is why the mayors of Alabama's largest cities need to share ideas.
"We're seeing positive trends in crime in Mobile, including a 25% reduction in Part 1 crimes last year, and new technology is driving that," Stimpson said. "From new tools and training to the growing use of home surveillance systems, technology is shaping the modern fight against crime."
