The Mobile Police Department is investigating after a 12-year-old was injured in a shooting that killed his dog.

Police said around 5 p.m. Saturday, the boy was taking out the trash when his small dog ran outside. The child ran down the 1000 block of Garland Street to retrieve the dog, but the dog began chasing a man. Police said soon after the dog stopped chasing the man it turned around towards home, which is when the man opened fire.

The 12-year-old boy was wounded, and the dog was killed. The child was hospitalized with a non-life-threatening injury, police said.

The shooter fled the scene. Anyone with information is asked to call police.
