The streets of Mobile will have added protection for Mardi Gras parades this year.

Public safety officials decided to purchase portable bollards following the New Year's Day terror attack in New Orleans.

The council approved $167,000 to purchase 18 bollards with trailers from Delta Scientific Corp.

The 4x4 bollards weigh about 1,000 pounds and are connectable.

Rob Lasky, Mobile's public safety director, said this is one effort officials are taking to protect pedestrians and vehicle traffic.

"This is just some of the advanced things we'd like to do to further harden downtown for Mardi Gras," Lasky said.

Additional bollards will be borrowed from Tuscaloosa.

"We realized that we needed to be more proactive in our approach to this Mardi Gras," said Mayor Sandy Stimpson. "We reached out to the mayor of Tuscaloosa because for game day, they have these blockades by bollards, and immediately he said, 'We've got six we'd be glad to let y'all use them."
