People in need of hearing aids could soon pay less in Mobile. The Mobile City Council is considering a resolution to exempt hearing aids from local sales tax.

State Rep. Margie Wilcox (R-Mobile) sponsored a statewide bill to eliminate taxes last year. Since the bill was signed into law, municipalities and counties have followed suit by eliminating their own sales taxes on hearing aids.

The state law will sunset in 2029 and must be renewed by the legislature. Wilcox told 1819 News she believed lawmakers would continue to exempt.

Mobile's resolution would also sunset in 2029.

"Whereas, the City Council of the City of Mobile, Alabama seeks to also exempt all gross proceeds from the sale and use of hearing instruments from the City of Mobile Sales and Use Tax commencing on October 1, 2025, and ending September 30, 2029 [unless extended by an act of the Legislature]," the resolution reads.

Wilcox has publicly asked all cities and counties to pass their own resolutions.

Mobile city council will vote on the resolution at their next council meeting.
