The Spiro Cheriogotis campaign for Mobile mayor announced Monday it has hired Candace Cooksey, the City of Mobile's senior political advisor, to lead the campaign.
Cooksey is taking unpaid leave from the city to help the campaign strategize.
"Candace is a talented strategist with years of campaign experience. She is also a friend and proud Mobilian who has chosen to raise her family here in the City of Mobile," Spiro said. "Her shared dedication to the success of our City makes her a great asset to the team."
Cooksey, who has also worked in public affairs, led current Mayor Sandy Stimpson's first two mayoral campaigns. She also served four years as the Stimpson administration's director of communications and governmental affairs.
"This is a personal choice for the future of our city," Cooksey said. "I have known Spiro and his family for many years. It will be my honor to work beside them as we build a movement to ensure a bright future for the City of Mobile."
Cheriogotis also resigned his position as a judge to campaign for mayor. He told 1819 News the move was worth the pay cut and judgeship retirement because he wanted what was best for the city.
The deadline to announce to run for mayor in the 2025 municipal election is June 10.
