Mobile Public Libraries removed a sexually explicit book for teens, according to Mobile police officer Sgt. John Young.
"Let's Talk About It: The Teen's Guide to Sex, Relationships, and Being a Human" contains explicit, nude images and encourages readers to search the internet for pornography, people and communities who share sexual interests. The book features details on how to use sex toys and perform sexual acts.
Young, a founding member of Men United Against Violence, addressed the council about the book in a rescheduled meeting on Thursday and thanked the city for removing it.
"It shows what community and politics when we work together, we do have the ability to positively impact and influence our children," said Young. "Not just the children that are being murdered, but also the children that are being exposed to things that promotes hypersexuality at a very young age."
Councilman Joel Daves said the city council did not remove the book. He said he did not know who had made that decision but didn't want to leave the impression that the council had anything to do with removing it.
Spanish Fort removed the same book after 1819 News discovered it was available for teens ages 13-17 in the city library. Mayor Michael McMillan said the book is under review and will be considered at the library board's next meeting on Jan. 6, 2025
The book is listed in the "Kid's Catalog" at Fairhope Public Library, and its current status is "checked out."
