On Tuesday, the Montgomery County Board of Education announced Dr. Zickeyous Byrd as the new superintendent of Montgomery Public Schools (MPS).

Byrd is the former superintendent of Selma City Public Schools. Former MPS superintendent Dr. Melvin Brown resigned in September.

"We are excited to welcome Dr. Zickeyous Byrd as our new Superintendent," said Arica Smith, president of the Montgomery County Board of Education. "His extensive experience, unwavering dedication to students, and leadership capabilities make him the ideal candidate to lead Montgomery Public Schools into the future. We are confident that under his leadership, MPS will continue to thrive and meet the evolving needs of our students and community."

Montgomery Mayor Steven Reed said in a statement on Tuesday, “I am disappointed by the Montgomery Public School Board’s decision to move forward with selecting a new superintendent tonight.”

“This moment called for unity, not urgency. It called for collaboration with the broader community, not closed-door decisions. Our students, teachers, and families deserve a process that is transparent, inclusive, and focused on long-term success — not short-term optics,” he added. “We’ve seen real progress in our school system. That progress was possible because we had leadership that engaged stakeholders and put students first. To rush this process is to risk reversing those gains. This isn’t about politics. It’s about the future of our children. It’s about restoring trust between the board and the people it serves. I remain committed to working with anyone who is truly invested in the success of Montgomery’s schools and the success of our young people.”
