MONTGOMERY — State lawmakers should pass "gun reform" local legislation specific to Montgomery, according to Montgomery Mayor Steven Reed.

Reed told attendees of a Montgomery Area Chamber of Commerce gathering on Wednesday that he will ask Montgomery's local legislative delegation to introduce "common sense gun reform" local legislation.

Reed has previously been critical of Alabama's constitutional carry law. The law is supported by 2nd Amendment advocates. It allows citizens to possess a firearm without a permit or license.

"If common sense gun reform doesn't make sense for the state of Alabama then let's make it make sense for Montgomery. I don't think everybody should have the right to carry. I don't think we should have permitless gun laws here," Reed said.

Local legislation only affects specific municipalities or counties, unlike other bills that have a statewide impact.

"We'll work with the Speaker's Office, we'll work with the Senate Pro-Tem, Lieutenant Governor and Governor to make this make sense but we can not continue to go around pointing fingers about this without coming up with solutions. So if urban communities are where the problem is, let's address the problem where it is with solutions that may make sense. Maybe it doesn't fit Monroe County but maybe it fits Montgomery," Reed said.
