He comes from a family of Methodist preachers. He served until mandatory retirement age at Montgomery megachurch Frazer Memorial. He continues outreach through John Ed Mathison Leadership Ministries.

He has a daily email ministry and a weekly podcast ministry. He used his time as an athlete, including tennis and racquetball, to reach other athletes and continues to serve as pastor emeritus at Frazer.

Now, Rev. John Ed Mathison has become the first recipient of the Global Church Network's “Synergize Leadership Award.” The group has 2,700 denominations and over 700,000 affiliated churches.

Mathison and wife Lynn are in Dallas, Texas, where John Ed is speaking to thousands. He was surprised when receiving the award.

“John Ed,” as he is affectionately called, worked 36 years as senior ministry at Frazer, retiring in 2008.

The purposes of his current ministry are:

  • Sharing best practices learned in 45 years of ministry

  • Preaching in local churches

  • Preaching in District and Annual Conference events

  • Preaching in laity rallies and summits

  • Preaching in Fellowship of Christian Athletes events

  • Teaching in leadership principles to Pastors

  • Teaching Pastors how to deploy laity as ministers

  • Teaching stewardship seminars for Pastors and laity

  • Coaching Pastors

  • Connecting people with leadership resources

  • Serving on steering committee of the Global Pastors Network

  • Serving on steering committee of the National Leadership Center for Excellence — working with veterans.

  • Serving on the Board of Directors at Valiant Cross Academy.

  • Speaking at several coaches conferences each year for college and high school coaches.
