The City of Montgomery will lobby legislators to approve a 1% occupational tax during the 2026 legislative session.

Members of the Montgomery City Council approved a resolution by a 6-3 vote on Tuesday directing the city’s lobbyists to approve legislation creating a new occupational tax. The slate of bills also included Aniah’s Law and anti-constitutional carry legislation.

Members who didn't vote for the resolution were Ed Grimes, Julie Beard and Glenn Pruitt, Jr.

The Montgomery City Council passed an occupational tax in 2020, but state lawmakers and Governor Kay Ivey blocked the measure by enacting a law requiring such levies to be approved by the legislature.

An occupational tax would require every individual employed within Montgomery, whether they lived in the city or resided in another area, to pay a 1% tax from each paycheck they received.
