U.S. Rep. Barry Moore (R-Enterprise) called for the impeachment of U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas on Tuesday as the House Judiciary Committee geared up to grill the bureaucrat over his handling of the southern border.

Mayorkas appeared on Wednesday morning before the committee, chaired by U.S. Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio).

Republicans on the House Homeland Security Committee already accused Mayorkas last week of intentionally neglecting his duty to implement a “radical open-borders agenda.”

Though Republicans have branded Mayorkas’ handling of the U.S.-Mexico border crisis an “open borders” policy, the administration has rejected the label.

Nevertheless, GOP lawmakers have cited Mayorkas’ cancellation of Trump-era policies, such as the construction of the U.S.-Mexico border wall, Title 42 and the Migrant Protection Protocols, as evidence of their claim.

Under Mayorkas, the DHS has also narrowed Immigration and Customs Enforcement guidance and increased the release of migrants into the United States using legal asylum pathways and catch-and-release.

Jordan addressed a letter to Mayorkas on Tuesday, accusing him of failing to provide data and information to the committee during his last hearing. He requested that Mayorkas come prepared with specific information, such as the number of migrants released into the United States.

“Our approach to managing the border security and humanely even within our fundamentally broken immigration system is working,” Mayorkas said in the hearing. “Unlawful entries between ports of entry on the Southwest border have consistently decreased by more than half compared to the peak before the end of Title 42.”

“Secretary Mayorkas has failed to faithfully execute the law,” Moore tweeted on Tuesday, sharing another tweet by the Republican Study Committee, also calling for Mayorkas' impeachment. “It's time to impeach him.”

An hour later, Moore published another tweet sharing Jordan’s letter.

“With more than six MILLION illegal border crossings under his watch, Secretary Mayorkas has a lot to answer for,” he wrote.
