The church remembered Ella Cook as a grounded and bright young woman who served others.

"For those of you who knew her, who know her, she was just an incredibly grounded and generous and faithful and bright light, both here at the Advent over many years as she was engaged and involved in our worship and in our community, and then she served here at the church and in the latter community," said Rev. Craig Smalley. "In all sincerity, just a tremendous, Ella, a tremendous and bright light, and there at Brown University as well, in the time that she was there, was such a light and such a witness."

Smalley read from John 1:5, reminding parishioners that "the darkness will not overcome the light."

The shooting occurred inside a classroom in the Barus and Holley engineering building on the last day of finals at Brown University. At least nine others were injured.

"God bless the victims and the families of the victims," President Donald Trump stated on Truth Social.

A person of interest, a man in his 30s, was detained early Sunday. That person has not been identified.
