House Majority Leader Scott Stadthagen (R-Hartselle) announced on Monday that freshman State Rep. Brock Colvin (R-Albertville) will serve as House Majority Whip as his predecessor moves to his new position in Senate leadership.

Colvin will replace outgoing Whip Randall Shedd (R-Fairview), who left the body to join the staff of new State Sen. Pro-Tem Garlan Gudger (R-Cullman).

"The majority whip is usually a veteran lawmaker with years of service, but as a freshman, Rep. Colvin has quickly earned the trust and respect of his fellow Republican Caucus members," Stadthagen said. "I have every confidence that he will serve our Caucus well in coordinating votes and helping manage the action on the House floor."

Colvin announced his bid for the House of Representative's 26th district in late 2021. After vanquishing his Democratic opponent by a massive margin in November 2022, Colvin became the youngest member of the House at 27.

Since then, Colvin has set himself apart by pursuing conservative legislation and earning spots on several committees.

Colvin appeared on Mobile radio FM Talk 106.5's "The Jeff Poor Show" on Monday to discuss his new position and his vision for his role as both a lawmaker and a caucus whip.

"I want to tell my constituents listening that I will continue to serve my district as I see fit and to the best of my ability," Colvin said. "But I certainly am now taking on a larger role to help our caucus in the entire state."

"The number one job for the majority whip is simply to count, to count votes on bills that are a major agenda item. So, the way I see myself is, yes, I'm counting. But mainly, I see myself as a bridge in this role. I'm a bridge from Leader Stadthagen and [House] Speaker [Nathaniel] Ledbetter, and take their plan and to tell our members and our caucus how they're going to execute that plan, and make sure our goals and our conservative agenda items are going to pass."

He continued, "At the same time, I'm that bridge for our members in our caucus to relay their concerns, their ideas, their opinions to leader Stadthagen and Speaker Ledbetter so they can know how the members are feeling on certain issues, and that's kind of where that vote count comes in. But, at the end of the day, I would say my two new responsibilities are: I'm going to be counting votes a lot more, and relaying a lot of information back and forth; being that bridge in our caucus."
