Huntsville’s new birthing center is owned and operated by one of the area’s most outspoken abortion providers.

Yashica Robinson works as a doctor in several facilities in the Huntsville area. She has an OB-GYN office, the Women’s Wellness Center. Robinson announced on Dec. 11 that she would be founding a birthing center in Huntsville, the Alabama Birth Center.

“This center was borne out of Dr. Robinson’s passion to see the Alabama birth community thrive in a new way,” the center’s website reads.

Robinson is also the director of the Alabama Women’s Center for Reproductive Alternatives, where she performs various procedures, including abortions. According to an interview Robinson had with Glamour in 2016, she performs over 1,500 abortions a year.

1819 News reached out to the Alabama Wellness Center for comment but did not receive a reply.

Robinson has arguably been one of the most prominent voices for abortion rights in the state. She testified before U.S. District Judge Myron Thompson to assure the court that abortion providers could open during the COVID-19 shutdowns.

Robinson was also the only individual plaintiff to file a lawsuit against Alabama’s Heartbeat Bill in 2018.  All other lawsuits against the bill were filed by institutions such as the ACLU and Planned Parenthood.

“As a mother and a physician, this abortion ban is deeply personal,” Robinson said. “I carry both these identities with me as I care for women and honor their decisions to become parents or to terminate their pregnancies.”

Robinson does not perform abortions at the Alabama Women’s Wellness Center, but she told Glamour that she would consider it if her regular clinic shuts down. Alabama law only permits OB-GYN offices to perform 100 abortions a year.

Robinson told AL.com that she simply views abortion as one of many ways to care for mothers.

“Abortion care is simply part of the work that defines a specialist who is an Obstetrician-Gynecologist,” Robinson said.
