The University of Alabama Young Americans for Freedom (UA YAF) chapter released a statement on Friday calling on the university to take action against a professor.
UA YAF, a conservative activism group on campus, released a statement following an article by 1819 News that revealed a UA professor is promoting a diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI)-based ideology in his class.
Terry Hughston, a UA political science professor, requires the reading of "The Racial Contract" and includes a DEI statement in his syllabus.

Hughston allegedly challenged the state’s DEI ban during his class, telling students, “[T]he state government can come at me if they want to.”
In its statement, UA YAF said it is “deeply concerned about the continued use” of "The Racial Contract," describing the book as one that promotes “critical race theory and viewpoint discrimination.”
The group argued that requiring the material conflicts with Alabama law, including Senate Bill 129, which restricts DEI-related programming in public universities.
“This report raises serious concerns about whether University faculty is complying with both the letter and spirit of the law,” the statement reads.
UA YAF called on the University of Alabama to review course materials and ensure compliance with state law and university policy, emphasizing what it described as the importance of maintaining “viewpoint neutrality within each classroom, for all students.”
Caleb Elmore, chairman of UA YAF, told 1819 that it was “nothing less than scandalous” that the university allows these things to occur.
“The University must take immediate action to ensure that its taxpayer-funded classes promote a healthy and honest understanding of America’s past and present,” Elmore said.
The University of Alabama has not yet publicly responded to the concerns raised in the report or the statement.
