With the U.S. House majority hanging in the balance, the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) has its sights set on Alabama's Congressional District 2 to unseat Democrat incumbent U.S. Rep. Shomari Figures (D-Montgomery).
The NRCC announced Monday that it would be targeting Figures' district to give Republicans momentum to expand their majority during the November midterm elections. The organization gives direct financial contributions to candidates and helps with organizing and research where needed.
"Since coming to Congress, Democrat Shomari Figures has voted against Alabama values, siding with his far-left party to push their extreme agenda of high taxes, open borders, and men competing in women's sports," NRCC Spokesman Reilly Richardson said. "This November, Republicans are going to flip AL-02 red and deliver Alabamians the commonsense leadership they deserve."
Figures faces an uphill battle to hold onto AL-02, a district President Donald Trump won by 14.3% in 2024.
Boasting a Trump endorsement, State Rep. Rhett Marques (R-Enterprise) is the heavy favorite to win the midterm election should he survive the August 11 Republican special primary against five other candidates.

According to Federal Election Commission records, Marques and Figures are neck-and-neck in campaign fundraising, reporting $1,300,076.32 and $1,295,921.07, respectively, from January through June.
