The National Weather Service (NWS) in Huntsville issued an urgent weather message for north Alabama Thursday.

A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect until 6 p.m. Thursday. An earlier issued Winter Storm Warning was canceled for north Alabama, but a freezing drizzle and light snow are still expected.

Areas impacted are Lauderdale, Colbert, Limestone, Madison and Jackson Counties, including the cities of Florence, Muscle Shoals, Sheffield, Tuscumbia, Athens, Huntsville, and Scottsboro.

Officials warn of slippery road conditions that could impact your evening and morning commutes. After the rain ends, any water on roads is expected to freeze. Drivers are advised to slow down and use caution.

The NWS said forecasting the amount of snow and ice accumulation is tricky and it will all depend on surface temperature. They believe those totals will fluctuate.
