The City of Opelika will likely keep Mayor Gary Fuller around as an unpaid consultant after his term in office ends in November.
Fuller announced recently that he was retiring as mayor after 21 years and not seeking re-election. Mayor-elect Eddie Smith will begin his new term in November after winning Opelika's mayoral race without a runoff in August.
Fuller's new post-mayoral role would give him an office in the Opelika Power Services building, but would be unpaid. The Alabama Ethics Commission approved the arrangement in an advisory opinion released at a meeting on Tuesday.
"We are working on an agreement that would allow him to be a consultant to not only the city of Opelika but also the Opelika Industrial Development Authority," Smith told 1819 News in an interview on Wednesday. "We can utilize the 21 years that he has served as mayor and the contacts that he has, people all the way around the world that he knows to help us continue the great things that we have going on in our city."
