Orange Beach Mayor Tony Kennon recently laid out plans to help with traffic congestion in and out of the south Baldwin County city.
Kennon said in addition to a new bridge being built by the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT), he wants to see another bridge built beside the existing Beach Express bridge.
ALDOT plans to turn the former toll bridge into a northbound-only bridge and the new bridge will be southbound-only. However, Kennon said his city needs a north and south way near The Wharf.
"We would have two lanes north and two lanes south," Kennon said. "We're trying to see if there's grant money out there, if ALDOT will in the future help with that."
Kennon also hopes a project to turn Canal Road into a four-lane bypass and eliminate the congested intersection at Highway 161 will help prevent bottlenecks during busy times, including evacuation orders.
"That will flow traffic much more freely, and if we get another bridge, you know, we'll essentially have a free-flowing transit system throughout the city," he stated.
