With midterms now less than 100 days away, President Donald Trump is demanding that the U.S. Senate forgo its planned August recess or eliminate the filibuster to pass stalled legislation strengthening election security.
The bill, entitled the SAVE America Act, would specifically require voters to show proof of citizenship when registering to vote and to present photo identification when casting ballots. Additionally, the bill would end mail-only registrations.
"John Thune should not allow the United States Senate to "leave town" until it passes The Save America Act or, far better still, TERMINATES THE FILIBUSTER, where Republicans can then quickly pass everything they ever dreamed of, including a full and deep-throated SAVE AMERICA ACT, the Budget, and the ever looming Debt Ceiling disaster, 1929," wrote Trump on Truth Social.
"The Dumocrats will do it on day one, and can’t believe how lucky they got with this Senate leadership. Remember, stupidity always brings LOSING & DEATH," he added.
On Monday, hours after Trump issued the ultimatum, Alabama's U.S. Sens. Tommy Tuberville (R-Auburn) and Katie Britt (R -Montgomery) told 1819 News that they fully support the president's position on the issue.
"The Senate has done NOTHING to deserve a five-week break," said Tuberville. "We haven’t funded the military, we are about to let Democrats shut down the government, and our elections STILL aren’t secure. The House has passed hundreds of bills. Other than the One Big Beautiful Bill, all the Senate has done is pass bills rebuking Trump and giving Democrats handouts. We have lost sight of the fact that our job is to deliver RESULTS for the American people."
He continued, "There is no issue I hear more about when I’m back home in Alabama than securing our elections. Under Communists Joe Biden and Barack Obama, more than 15 million third-world illegals invaded our country. These illegals are costing the American taxpayers billions of dollars and are planning to vote in our midterm elections in just 99 days."
According to Tuberville, "traditions in the Senate" should no longer be adhered to because the Democrats would "steal" the 2026 and 2028 elections.
"The American people didn’t vote for a Republican party obsessed with preserving their own power through the manufactured filibuster," he asserted. "They voted for a Republican party that campaigned on fighting back against the TENS OF MILLIONS of third-world illegals who came here under Joe Biden and are looking to destroy this country."
"If we do not pass the SAVE America Act before November, Democrats will steal the 2026 and 2028 elections and we will go back to Joe Biden’s immigration policy on steroids under the new Communist Democrat party," Tuberville continued. "Now is the time to dig in, eliminate the manufactured filibuster, and start a new Senate tradition of actually getting things done for the Constitution and the American people."
He added, "I’ll be joining Senator Mike Lee in voting against any attempts to adjourn for recess. Americans didn’t send us to D.C. to take a vacation. They sent us here to preserve the greatest country on earth."
Britt pledged to stay in Washington, D.C. for "as long as it takes" to pass the bill.
"Absolutely," said Britt. "I want to see the Senate pass SAVE America, pass the Russia-Iran Sanctions bill, confirm President Trump’s nominees, and prevent another Democratic shutdown before the August state work period. As always, I will stay as long as it takes to get the job done."

According to Tuberville, the SAVE America Act would have broad bipartisan support, with a 2025 Pew Research poll showing 95% of Republicans and 71% of Democrats supporting voter ID. The support also transcends demographics among American citizens—82% of Latino voters, 76% of black voters and 85% of white voters favor photo ID.
