Earlier this month, former President Donald Trump, the Republican presidential nominee, urged Capitol Hill Republicans to reject a continuing resolution (CR) to prevent a government shutdown if an election security provision is not included.

"If Republicans in the House, and Senate, don't get absolute assurances on Election Security, THEY SHOULD, IN NO WAY, SHAPE, OR FORM, GO FORWARD WITH A CONTINUING RESOLUTION ON THE BUDGET," Trump posted on his Truth Social social media account. "THE DEMOCRATS ARE TRYING TO "STUFF" VOTER REGISTRATIONS WITH ILLEGAL ALIENS. DON'T LET IT HAPPEN - CLOSE IT DOWN!!!"

"If Republicans don't get the SAVE Act, and every ounce of it, they should not agree to a Continuing Resolution in any way, shape, or form," he posted last week. "Democrats are registering Illegal Voters by the TENS OF THOUSANDS, as we speak - They will be voting in the 2024 Presidential Election, and they shouldn't be allowed to. Only American Citizens should be voting in our Most Important Election in History, or any Election! A Vote must happen BEFORE the Election, not AFTER the Election when it is too late. BE SMART, REPUBLICANS, YOU'VE BEEN PUSHED AROUND LONG ENOUGH BY THE DEMOCRATS. DON'T LET IT HAPPEN AGAIN. Remember, this is Biden/Harris' fault, not yours!"

Last week, House Republicans offered legislation to fund the government for six months. They also attached the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act, which would require proof of U.S. citizenship to register to vote in federal elections.

In remarks given to The Hill, U.S. Rep. Gary Palmer (R-Hoover), the chairman of the U.S. House Republican Policy Committee, seemed to reject a government solution under any circumstance.

"Everybody wants to go home and campaign, and there are some, particularly, that want to go home and campaign because they're in really tough races," Palmer said. "A government shutdown would embolden our enemies, further undermine our reliability and respect among our allies. So, I don't think a shutdown is good for anybody."
